Been A While…

August 5, 2011

Once again, I know things have been quiet on my blog. Life has been busy. Some of you might know that sadly, there has been a death in the family recently. Last week, my father-in-law passed away. He was a great man, the nicest, the most generous and the best father-in-law a girl could ask for, and we were all devastated by the loss.

I would like to express my sincere thanks for all the thoughtful emails, comments, and messages we received during this tough time. From friends, fellow bloggers, and readers just checking in on how our family has been doing. I was surprised but also so very grateful. I know many of you don’t know my husband, but regardless he was very touched by all the kind words of support and offerings of condolences about his dad. I feel fortunate to be part of this wonderful community.

Getting back into a routine is tough, but we’re getting there. This July was a hard, hard month. Isn’t it cruel, how sadness or stress can rob one of the enjoyment from things they love to do? I think it was that way for both of us, but it was especially bad for my husband, and sometimes I’m just at a loss as to what to do in situations like this. But I did see him getting back into MMOs again yesterday, and he was even bribing me with vanity pets to do daily quests with him, so slowly but surely, I think things seem to be getting better!

Me, I’m going to pick this blog up again. I admit there were moments over the last couple weeks where the mere thought of sitting down in front of the computer would give me a headache, and being sick for half the month didn’t help. But while the break was nice, ultimately writing is something I love doing. I’d like to say thank you once again to everyone, and here’s to hoping August wouldn’t be quite so turbulent, eh?

  1. You know it’s funny, I was just on your blog two minutes ago, going over your to CE or not to CE post, thinking, where the hell is she, it’s very unlike her not to post in a while. Now I know :(

I am very sorry for your loss, please accept my sincerest condolences.

Good to have you back, bury yourself in writing, its the greatest escape.

    • Thanks for your kind words :)

And I do think there is something to be said about taking some time away. Since blogging again after two weeks, it seems the words flow better now.

  2. Good to see you back in the saddle. I have no such excuse for the neglect of my blog.

    • Sometimes real life gets the better of all of us :)

  3. Hey, I’m not going anywhere, so if you need someone to talk to or play with, just let me know! :D

    • Thank you, and yeah, I know, I should play more STO :P

  4. Very sorry to hear about your father-in-law.

My advice, such that it is, is not to push yourselves too much when you can avoid it. Jobs and such you just gotta do, but don’t force yourself back into ‘optional’ activities like gaming and blogging. Take time to heal.

Please pass on my condolences to your husband as well, and to your brother-in-law.

    • Thank you, my husband is honestly touched by everyone’s kind words.

And thanks for the advice. There were times that I felt guilty and thought we should force ourselves back into a routine, and fortunately it didn’t take me very long to realize it didn’t work. Some things definitely just take time.

  5. Good to see you back doing what you do so well. Very touching and well written piece.

  6. I’m sorry for your family’s loss, if you need something that I can help let me know.

Hey if you ever need to take a break, and want a guest blogger, I’ll slap my wig and dress on….and…wait…never mind. I said too much already.

    Take Care.

    • If ever I decide to invite on guest bloggers, you will definitely be someone I’d ask!

  7. Sorry to hear about the family loss, always tough time when such come to pass for anyone. Yet good to see you back at the blog office, blogging can be like therapy sometimes. Hope you can get your writing mojo back :)

    • It sure can, and the funny thing is, after being away for a while, the words seem to come easier too :)

Thank you for your kind words.

  8. I am really sorry for your loss.

    • Opps, I put the wrong info into the wrong areas, oh well.

      • Haha, no worries :P

  10. To me, August means fall is right around the corner — and since fall is one of my favorite seasons, August leading into September is one of the things I always look forward to each year.

I guess the changing season is ironically fitting concerning your recent loss.

When my grandfather passed away last year, I had a chance to speak at his funeral. I told everyone in attendance what I honestly believed in my heart: a good man can’t rest if the family he cultivated can’t carry on.

It sounds like your father-in-law was a good man. Though I don’t know the specifics, it sounds like he also cultivated himself a good family in his life.

A good, loving man would want nothing more than to see his loved ones smile again, and laugh, and joke. Mourning is necessary, but there’s always a time to move forward. Not to move on — you’ll always carry them with you wherever you go –, but it is important to keep walking forward, to keep breathing, to smile and laugh again.

That way, the person you lost can rest more peacefully knowing he left behind a strong family that bands together through tough times.

Whatever speed you choose to jump back into blogging, I wish you luck. Writing can be extremely therapeutic.

Welcome back. I hope to read more from you in the coming days.

P.S. – Vanity pets are wicked. Get lots of them.

    • Yes, he was a good family man, and was a good father, seeing as how my husband turned out :D Thanks for your comment, it was really touching and emotional, and so very true.

I am looking forward to fall as well. I love summers, but I also love being able to breathe the brisk air of fall :)

  11. I am so sorry for your loss. When someone that has become a fixture in your life ceases, the space they leave behind can become sorrow and emptiness. I’ve lost several, and even after years some emptiness remains. I try not to dwell on the hollows left by their departures. I try to dwell on the memories they left me. I am more than I would have been had I not known them.

I hope that makes some sense. I’m glad to hear that you are ok ;-)

    • Wow, no way to delete comments. On reflection, for grief, typed words seem a poor balm. I hope mine do not seem dismissive, they were certainly not intended that way.

      • I didn’t think you were being dismissive at all :) You spoke from the heart, which is all that anyone can ask for. And I know what you mean. I wonder how I would deal with something like this, but I also know it is a natural part of life. In time, even grief will pass, but we can hold on to happy memories forever :)

  12. I’m glad you and Mr. GC are starting to get back into your normal routines. We’ve missed you.

  13. Glad to see a post from you after awhile, just sorry it’s under the current circumstances. The Misses just had a loss of her uncle and the funeral is in a few days. (They actually have to fly him in from another country, which is not helping very much.) I didn’t know the guy, but her family is pretty shaken up.

Hang in there, and take your time. We’ll be here when ya get back into the swing of things. Best wishes to you and the hubby.

    • Thank you for your kind words. And I am so sorry to hear about your family’s loss as well. Please, give my regards to the misses and my condolences.

  14. My condolences to you and your husband, so sorry to hear about your loss! Hope you guys start to feel a bit better soon *hugs*

    • Thanks! Life is gradually getting back to normal :)

  15. So glad to have you back. I know that it has been rough for the two of you, so it’s always a good thing to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Welcome back!
